Great! I set up a strace on the 'doit script', and the very act of running strace seems to make everything behave as expected. But, I can't run this thing all the time, as strace generates a small quantity of output. Oh well, I'll keep monitoring it for a while and see what comes out.

Yep. That's the occasional detriment of strace. It hides the problem you're looking to track. I wouldn't dismiss it's potential as a solution for your problem so quickly though. strace with a much larger disk and a top-of-the- line processor is a clear win! ;-) Sorry it wasn't more help to
