Thanks Charles and all. I found the problem and checkX works. I erroneously was using checkX argument whereas checkX uses checkX [options] and the -d option required the arg.
My attempts to use DISPLAY and explicit checkX 127.0,0.1:0 failed. It might be nice for checkX to check the DISPLAY env. variable.
