Why would you want to run a notepad ? is your vi infected by a new cygwin virus ? :)

I actually tried this as an experiment: started up Cygwin's sshd on the win

app (notepad). Problem was, of course, that notepad opened on the Windows

Re: How to get xdm working?

2003-09-08 Thread Sylvain Petreolle
This doesnt work for me on Win2K.
I have an account that is in the Administrators group.
I copied the SYSTEM line and changed it to root: xdm fails the same
way.
I tried with the Administrator line too, no way.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~
$ grep 544 /etc/passwd
SYSTEM:*:18:544:,S-1-5-18::
root:*:18:544:,S-1-5-18::
Administrators:*:544:544:,S-1-5-32-544::

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~
$ xdm
Only root wants to run xdm

This is probably a bug in xdm. It's been discussed on this list
 before.
Cygwin (or, rather, Windows) doesn't have a root user, but does have
 users
with various permissions usually attributed to root. On Win9x you
 can
simply add a line for root to /etc/passwd (on WinNT/2k/XP you can
 copy
the line for system and change the user name in that new line to
 root).

true)

This command is shown as removed from the distribution, but according

- The 'su' command doesnt work on my WinXP workstation, even if passwd

Is there some fix known at this moment ? Looking trough the archives

--- Vijay Sampath [EMAIL PROTECTED] a écrit : Hi,

I just happened to read the following thread in Cygwin. I am having
 the
same problem after I recently upgraded to a new version of cygwin.

The problem is that we have makefiles which call perl scripts. We use
dmake and ccperl (which is a Windows version of perl). I didn't fully
understand the explanation given here, but I am having the same
 problem
as the original poster. Each time I call dmake, it opens and closes
dozens of windows. I am guessing this happens for every invocation of
ccperl and any shell commands in the perl script or makefile. Since I
 am
the only one in the company using cygwin and the X environment, I
 cannot
 change the makefiles.

I was wondering if any of you have a solution for this, especially
 since
this did not use to happen before. Please reply-all as I am not

FWIW, I'm getting the same behavior as reported by the original
 poster
(i.e., any cygwin program called from a batch file from an xterm
 pops
 up a
 new window).

However, I believe I have an explanation of what's happening, though
 not a
 solution:
Cygwin programs running in an xterm have a tty that does not have a
console window associated with it. When any cygwin program is
 invoked,
 it
checks (through a part of cygwin1.dll) whether it's running in a
 tty,
 and
if so, does not try to manipulate the console at all. However, when
cmd.exe is run in such a setting, it loses the tty information.
 Thus,
 a
program invoked from this cmd.exe session has neither a tty nor a
 console
window, so it has to allocate one. Hope this makes sense.

That sounds like exactly what is going on, Igor. Thank you for
 explaining
 it so well.

To the original poster: since there is no way to propagate tty
 information
through a cmd.exe session, I suppose the best solution would still
 be
 the
one Alexander proposed, i.e., live with it. Why would one want to
 call
 a
batch file from an xterm, anyway?

Especially a .bat file that is calling cygwin programs.

I've been up all night obsessively finishing a package for cygwin

So, that being said, here's what I've got:
I made a small set of patches against CVS today that help me deal with
issues I came across in the packaging. _These are not for inclusion in
CVS._ I patched and compiled a static binary with runtime cpu-detection
and boxed it up with an app that hides the console window and made a
nifty installer based on Inno. (it's free, I don't have the URL handy.)
MPlayer installs, associates itself with media file types (not
configurable yet, it doesn't even ask { AND YES, THIS WILL TAKE OVER
YOUR FILE ASSOCIATIONS, BEWARE} ), and when you launch them you get
a directx window, no console, and win32 audio output with framedrop on.
OSD is enabled and fonts are installed, and all the expected input
bindings are in effect. On the boxen I've tested on so far, it actually
plays very well.

One problem I had, though, was unsupported video codecs. When I found
one of those, I got only audio, with no video window. And since I was
having the console window hidden, there was no way to quit MPlayer. :)
So, I added in a hack that creates enough of a fake decoder in these
cases to keep the vo open for control of the audio. I would like to
eventually replace this with an image that says Video stream not
available or some such thing, but right now it's a black box.

Also, I've included Real DLLs in this package, but I have not tested
them at all.

All this and more can be found at http://joey.nicewarrior.org/cygmp/,
and I can also post any of these things to the list if requested.
What you'll find is the installer exe, source to the wrapper app that
hides the console, the bad patches I used, and possibly some logs.

That's all for now. Any feedback is appreciated.
But now, I _must_ sleep. :)

No. Using the remote application is like walking to the linux pc and
working there. You don't have access to the windows host. The only
 way
to exchange files is to use a network filesystem (SMB or AFS) and
 access
this from linux and windows. Same for the printer.

How to run SDL native with Cygwin

2002-11-13 Thread Sylvain Petreolle
From http://www.libsdl.org/extras/win32/cygwin/ :

Steps to build SDL natively with the Cygwin environment available at:
http://www.cygwin.com/

These steps assume that you are comfortable with the UNIX environment.

Step 1. Run the Cygwin setup program, install the default packages and
the development packages (adding any extras you want, like
vim).
Step 2. Run the Cygwin shell. Further instructions assume you're in
this shell.
Step 3. Extract the SDL source into a directory and run:
./configure make make install
Step 4. When you're ready to build SDL applications, copy SDL.dll from
/usr/local/lib to whereever your SDL application source
resides.

Troubleshooting:
===
Q: I get an error when building and I unpacked the source in a path
with spaces.
A: Unpack the source in a path without spaces, like /tmp, and build
there.
===
Q: I get the following error while building SDL:
GL/gl.h: No such file or directory
A: You need to get the OpenGL development headers from:
http://www.libsdl.org/extras/win32/cygwin/opengl-devel.tar.gz
You need to unpack these in the /usr directory.
===
Q: My version of SDL doesn't have DirectX support!
A: You need to get the DirectX development headers and libraries from:
http://www.libsdl.org/extras/win32/cygwin/directx-devel.tar.gz
You need to unpack these in the /usr directory.
===
Q: My version of SDL doesn't have assembly support, NASM is not
available.
A: You need to get nasm assembler from:
http://www.libsdl.org/extras/win32/cygwin/nasm.exe
Put this file in the /usr/bin directory.

Re: lesstif confuses app-defaults

2002-08-01 Thread Sylvain Petreolle

Dou you manage to use mwm normally ? Trying to use lesstiff with the
file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/mwm/system.mwmrc copied in $HOME/.mwmrc doesn't
function. (even it's written in README in the same directory)

It reports :
Warning: Cannot convert string rom14 to type FontStruct
(font problem, I think)
and menus don't work, I cannot move/resize/close/... windows.

--- Hans Werner Strube [EMAIL PROTECTED] a écrit : After
upgrading XFree86 and installing lesstif (so far, I had used my

 instead of a symlink /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults -
 /etc/X11/app-defaults,
 there was a directory /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults containing a
 symlink
app-defaults and a file Mwm (the latter should rather have been in
/etc/X11/app-defaults). Thus no application (except mwm) could find
 its
app-defaults file. This is obviously a bug in the lesstif tar file.
(I just found this effect has been reported before in

 but is still not fixed.)

if you create the skel package (as in Linux), no one will be forced to
use it in any way...

Examples are fine. Forcing the user to have them would be a pain,
 IMO.
It complicates the install process beyond what is needed. These
 files
are for the user to modify there environment to their specific need,
 not
what someone else dreams up as a standard user environment. The
standard environment should only be controlled by the /etc/profile,

Reasons:
1 - This is cygwin-xfree specific.
2 - The both whole parts you describe are outdated.
XFree archives are now installed by the standard installer at

 --- Samuel [EMAIL PROTECTED] a écrit :

 Since the

and downloading it directly on the website gives :

-rwxr-xr-x Administrator/None 3064320 2002-06-13

It seems to function (no error message on console)
but my keyboard is US.

if I issue 'setxkbmap -layout fr' once, I get :
Couldn't interpret _XKB_RULES_NAMES property
Use defaults:rules - 'xfree86' model - 'pc101' layout

if I issue it a second time, I get no message and the
layout is set up.

Hm, I don't see that here:

mv: cannot move `abc' to a subdirectory of itself,
 `Abc/abc'

What version of Cygwin and mv are you using? What
 does the directory
 structure of abc look like?

As you can see, you cannot rename file differing
only by case. This is a
Windowsism. Sorry. Complain to Bill if you don't
 like it! ;-) You'll
need to do this as a two step process (i.e. move
 'abc' to a different name
temporarily and then move it to 'Abc'). I can't say
 why you got the result
 you did however.

Hi,
I'm using cygwin version 1.3.10 with all updated
packages.

mv --version reports : mv (fileutils) 4.1
(cygcheck reports exactly fileutils 4.1-1)
This is reproductible with every directory.

Steps I follow :
mkdir mydir
mv mydir MyDir (or Mydir, mydiR).

RE: xfree86 install makes wininit not working

2002-04-19 Thread Sylvain Petreolle

It does, via the proscribed windows API to perform
 copy-on-reboot for
 in-use files in win95.
Windows is meant to perform the copies before
 loading the GUI, and then
remove the ini entries after it does that.
Already know this (I develop for Wine Emulator :))
But that's ok to review point after point to see a
failure somewhere.

If I could get some details - the /var/log/setup.log
and setup.log.full, and the machine layout (where
windows cygwin etc
are), and a copy of the
ineffective wininit.ini, I will see what I can
 figure out.
Ok, I attached them.

cygcheck -s -r -v follows separately (Yahoo doesn't
allow 3 attachments per message).

As to why this happened, I assume that the user was
 running X at the
same time as installing it via setup.exe.

 Rob
I just updated Cygwin via typing
http://www.cygwin.com/setup.exe in IE 6.

Cygwin-X wasn't running at the time.
Even Cygwin itself wasn't running.

Yes, I checked for some of these, the .new exists in
the correct paths (checked in dos box too to see if

Setup.exe bugreport

2002-04-19 Thread Sylvain Petreolle

Hi,

while looking for the new Xfree86 packages in my
local package directory (in my case D:\cyg-install),

I see that packages are saved in a curious directory
since March 22th.

Its name is :
D:\cyg-install\ftp%3a%2f%2fmirrors.rcn.net%2fmirrors%2fsources.redhat.com%2fcygwin

No package appears to be updated in normal directories
like D:\cyg-install\contrib

I always use the net version of setup.exe, i don't
have a local copy.I'm running Cygwin under WinME.

Xfree86 install makes wininit not working

2002-04-19 Thread Sylvain Petreolle

Hi,

I wanted to update my existing Xfree86-4.2.0-1
installation.
So i choose a default Xfree86 installation.
All files downloaded correct,
and i was told that everything was ok.

But at reboot,
a 65497 bytes wininit.ini wants to rename/rewrite 627
files, and no one is replaced (wininit.ini isn't even
renamed to .bak)

This damn thing makes windows write Please wait while
updating your configuration files... every time
I reboot if I don't rename the file.
could the fact that wininit.ini is too big make it
fail ?

I'm running it under Windows Me.

 Hi all,

Thanks for the analogy with the toaster :).

 Seriously,
Trying to run cygwin under WINE environment is a
 good
testcase for both power companies (ie cygwin and
 wine
 :)).

The goal of a bug entry created for wine is to run
bash/sh in WINE environment. If someone is
 interested
 you can look at
 http://bugs.codeweavers.com/show_bug.cgi?id=443

Various cygwin programs function at this day
 (mount,ls, and several others).

 Thanks by advance,
 Sylvain.

Re: New version of setup.exe broken when running with WINE

2002-03-25 Thread Sylvain Petreolle

Sorry, but it is not. When an emulation environment
 does not properly
emulate Windows and causes a problem with a program,
 then it is
 not the program's fault.
I agree with you, but in that case, setup.exe wouldn't
have function by the past ...

I really don't understand this line of thinking. If
 you had a problem
running Powerpoint under Wine would you report it to
 Microsoft?
Has been made many times by us... and then more web
sites are talking about compatibility of their
programs
with Wine. Let's take HeadLight Software example.
After a few bug reports, they put a page about Wine
and GetRight ... it's running properly under Wine
today.

Yeah, these are people reporting problems in *Wine*.

Not only. Cygwin Bash is doing (maybe ?) unwanted
access to COM1 port when run under Wine for example

 I'd certainly reject any patch
 that I saw whose sole
purpose was to add Wine support to cygwin.
To answer your question: Cygwin is the power
 company. Wine is the hair
 dryer. Fix the hair dryer.

Please give me a try : Cygwin Wine are 2 power
companies... It would be great to make a dialog to fix
problems of the BOTH parts, not only one...
You 'll only have benefit

Note that I use both Wine and cygwin today...

New version of setup.exe broken when running with WINE

2002-03-21 Thread Sylvain Petreolle

Hi,

When run with WINE,
setup.exe 2.194.2.15 displays stranges characters in
the window title (non-blocking problem),
but stops function after choosing the mirror. (the
only one that appears is the last used when running
the previous version).

A subwindow is apparently tried to be open.

I have put a screenshot at

Re: setxkbmap failure with cygwin-xfree 4.2.0

 --- Charles L. Werner [EMAIL PROTECTED] a écrit :
Greetings,

I have attempted to use setxkbmap to change the
 keyboard layout to a
swiss-german layout. Just using the default layout
 leads to getting
standard key codes within the XFree desktop apps
 (xterm...). Our
installation is the latest 4.2.0 XFree86 , up to
 date cygwin
installation (see output of cygcheck attached) under
 NT-4 sp5 and WIN2K.
   With the command:

 setxkbmap -layout de_CH

you get the setxkbmap error message:

 Couldn't interpret _XKB_RULES_NAMES property
 Use defaults: rules - 'xfree86' model - 'pc101'
 layout - 'us'
 Error loading new keyboard description

There was also a MS error box that popped up with
 the message:

 Failed assertion
 fds_on_hold !=NULL
 at line 643 of file

/cygnus/netrel/src/cygwin-1.3.10-1/winsup/cygwin/dtable.cc

I tried other arguments to setxkbmap but all give
 the same response,
even using the default arguments. xkb files are in
 /etc/lib/X11/xkb

Any suggestions? is some environment variable
 wrongly set?

 Thanks!

Hi Ralf and others,

KDE is alpha, that's a fact.
But I wait the installation of cygwin/XFree as
packages...
Then you'll be able to put KDE installable as a cygwin
package !
* sad because m$ programs reinstall every library they
need whithout any notion of packaging *

BASH: kill: (388067) - Not owner

2002-01-25 Thread Sylvain Petreolle

Hi,

I installed a few days ago mysql server 3.23.25 for
Windows (i'm running latest cygwin with Windows ME).

I want to let mysqld server be running by cygwin.

I wrote a script and forgot the to put the task in
background.

/etc/profile.d/S01mysqld.sh:
if [ `ps | grep -i mysqld-opt` = '' ]
then
echo -n Starting mysqld...
rm -f /var/run/mysqld.pid
/usr/sbin/mysqld
if [ ps -ef |grep mysqld-opt ] ; then
ps -ef |grep mysqld-opt | awk '{print
$1}' /var/run/mysqld.pid
echo [OK]
fi
else
echo mysqld is already running... [FAILED]
fi

So when i wanted to kill it, made also ps -f:
$ ps -f
 UID PIDPPID TTY STIME COMMAND
 syl 341143 1 con 11:11:09 /usr/bin/BASH
 syl 145963 341143 con 11:17:19 /usr/bin/SH
 syl 388067 145963 conJan 1
/cygdrive/c/mysql/bin/mysqld-opt
 syl 517055 1 con 11:17:31 /usr/bin/BASH
 syl 496595 517055 con 13:04:57 /usr/bin/PS

and do kill 388067, i was then told i am not the owner
of the process !

The only way to kill it (i tried before with -9
option)
was to use WinMySQLadmin.

What could I do to solve the problem ?

Sylvain
+ Future will be better tomorrow +
