Re: How to get xdm working?
This doesnt work for me on Win2K. I have an account that is in the Administrators group. I copied the SYSTEM line and changed it to root: xdm fails the same way. It's been discussed on this list before. Cygwin (or, rather, Windows) doesn't have a root user, but does have users with various permissions usually attributed to root. On Win9x you can simply add a line for root to /etc/passwd (on WinNT/2k/XP you can copy the line for system and change the user name in that new line to root). = Sylvain Petreolle (spetreolle_at_users_dot_sourceforge_dot_net) ICQ #170597259 Say NO to software patents Dites NON aux brevets logiciels What if tomorrow the War could be over ? I am having the same problem after I recently upgraded to a new version of cygwin. The problem is that we have makefiles which call perl scripts. We use dmake and ccperl (which is a Windows version of perl). I didn't fully understand the explanation given here, but I am having the same problem as the original poster. Each time I call dmake, it opens and closes dozens of windows. I am guessing this happens for every invocation of ccperl and any shell commands in the perl script or makefile. Since I am the only one in the company using cygwin and the X environment, I cannot change the makefiles. I was wondering if any of you have a solution for this, especially since this did not use to happen before. Please reply-all as I am not subscribed to the list. How, after Igor stated that cmd shows up in xterm I tried this too and it works for me. Even the snippet above displays in the xterm window. bye ago FWIW, I'm getting the same behavior as reported by the original poster (i.e., any cygwin program called from a batch file from an xterm pops up a new window). However, I believe I have an explanation of what's happening, though not a solution: Cygwin programs running in an xterm have a tty that does not have a console window associated with it. When any cygwin program is invoked, it checks (through a part of cygwin1.dll) whether it's running in a tty, and if so, does not try to manipulate the console at all. However, when cmd.exe is run in such a setting, it loses the tty information. Thus, a program invoked from this cmd.exe session has neither a tty nor a console window, so it has to allocate one. Hope this makes sense. That sounds like exactly what is going on, Igor. Thank you for explaining it so well. To the original poster: since there is no way to propagate tty information through a cmd.exe session, I suppose the best solution would still be the one Alexander proposed, i.e., live with it. Why would one want to call a batch file from an xterm, anyway? Especially a .bat file that is calling cygwin programs. cgf = Sylvain Petreolle (spetreolle at users dot sourceforge dot net) Fight Spam ! Morpheus, in Matrix. ___ Do You Yahoo!? -- Une adresse @yahoo.fr gratuite et en français ! Yahoo! Mail : http://fr.mail.yahoo.com ---BeginMessage--- Hello! I've been up all night obsessively finishing a package for cygwin mplayer. I want to make it clear that I hope this is decent work, but that I can make no guarantees because I haven't slept at all. If you don't like it, that's fine. I don't consider this to be release quality yet. In fact, I'm totally prepared for the possiblity that no one other than myself thinks this is a good idea. That happens to me a lot. :) /DISCLAIMER So, that being said, here's what I've got: I made a small set of patches against CVS today that help me deal with issues I came across in the packaging. _These are not for inclusion in CVS._ I patched and compiled a static binary with runtime cpu-detection and boxed it up with an app that hides the console window and made a nifty installer based on Inno. (it's free, I don't have the URL handy.) MPlayer installs, associates itself with media file types (not configurable yet, it doesn't even ask { AND YES, THIS WILL TAKE OVER YOUR FILE ASSOCIATIONS, BEWARE} ), and when you launch them you get a directx window, no console, and win32 audio output with framedrop on. OSD is enabled and fonts are installed, and all the expected input bindings are in effect. On the boxen I've tested on so far, it actually plays very well. One problem I had, though, was unsupported video codecs. When I found one of those, I got only audio, with no video window. And since I was having the console window hidden, there was no way to quit MPlayer. :) So, I added in a hack that creates enough of a fake decoder in these cases to keep the vo open for control of the audio. I would like to eventually replace this with an image that says Video stream not available or some such thing, but right now it's a black box. Also, I've included Real DLLs in this package, but I have not tested them at all. All this and more can be found at http://joey.nicewarrior.org/cygmp/, and I can also post any of these things to the list if requested. What you'll find is the installer exe, source to the wrapper app that hides the console, the bad patches I used, and possibly some logs. That's all for now. Any feedback is appreciated. But now, I _must_ sleep. :) --Joey ___ MPlayer-dev-eng mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mplayerhq.hu/mailman/listinfo/mplayer-dev-eng ---End Message---

couldn't that be output on stderr/stdout ? However, you may be surprised at the result of invoking XWin -help, which is to say you'll see no output (nor will the X server start up). Re: mv problem
Hm, I don't see that here: #mv abc Abc mv: cannot move `abc' to a subdirectory of itself, `Abc/abc' What version of Cygwin and mv are you using? What does the directory structure of abc look like? As you can see, you cannot rename file differing only by case. This is a Windowsism. Sorry. Complain to Bill if you don't like it! ;-) You'll need to do this as a two step process (i.e. move 'abc' to a different name temporarily and then move it to 'Abc'). I can't say why you got the result you did however. Hi, I'm using cygwin version 1.3.10 with all updated packages. mv --version reports : mv (fileutils) 4.1 (cygcheck reports exactly fileutils 4.1-1) This is reproductible with every directory. RE: xfree86 install makes wininit not working
It does, via the proscribed windows API to perform copy-on-reboot for in-use files in win95. Windows is meant to perform the copies before loading the GUI, and then remove the ini entries after it does that. Already know this (I develop for Wine Emulator :)) But that's ok to review point after point to see a failure somewhere. If I could get some details - the /var/log/setup.log and setup.log.full, and the machine layout (where windows cygwin etc are), and a copy of the ineffective wininit.ini, I will see what I can figure out. Ok, I attached them. cygcheck -s -r -v follows separately (Yahoo doesn't allow 3 attachments per message). As to why this happened, I assume that the user was running X at the same time as installing it via setup.exe. Rob I just updated Cygwin via typing http://www.cygwin.com/setup.exe in IE 6. Re: New version of setup.exe broken when running with WINE
Sorry, but it is not. When an emulation environment does not properly emulate Windows and causes a problem with a program, then it is not the program's fault. I agree with you, but in that case, setup.exe wouldn't have function by the past ... I really don't understand this line of thinking. If you had a problem running Powerpoint under Wine would you report it to Microsoft? Has been made many times by us... and then more web sites are talking about compatibility of their programs with Wine. Let's take HeadLight Software example. After a few bug reports, they put a page about Wine and GetRight ... it's running properly under Wine today. Yeah, these are people reporting problems in *Wine*. Not only. Cygwin Bash is doing (maybe ?) unwanted access to COM1 port when run under Wine for example I'd certainly reject any patch that I saw whose sole purpose was to add Wine support to cygwin. To answer your question: Cygwin is the power company. Wine is the hair dryer. Fix the hair dryer. Please give me a try : Cygwin Wine are 2 power companies... It would be great to make a dialog to fix problems of the BOTH parts, not only one... You 'll only have benefit Note that I use both Wine and cygwin today... ___ Do You Yahoo!? -- Une adresse yahoo.fr gratuite et en français ! Yahoo!
