In preparation for a new octave release, the octave-forge packaging has been
modified to remove encoding of the octave version from the install paths of .m
and .oct files. See the thread

incorporates important bug fixes, but no new features. The 2.9 release
Unstable series incorporates new features, but will probably not be packaged
