Hm. I may be doing something wrong:

Adding
set sendmail=/usr/sbin/ssmtp.exe
to /etc/mail.rc allows nail to work with ssmtp.
What's weird, is that nail saw every command line option as an email address:
$ echo test | nail -s subject [EMAIL PROTECTED]
$ smtp-server: 501 -s: recipient address must contain a domain
. . . message not
