Just to be clear from the start, Cygwin 1.7 not 1.5. And I tried to
make this clear. And I tried to not let Outlook's word-wrap inter-
fere.

Thank you! xterm now works again.
The solution was:
Run the Cygwin "setup" program, and on the "Select Packages" page,
choose "Utils" and within there choose "termcap"
and downgrade to version "20050421-1".
