Well, Thanks to this group - I connected with Benjamin Grilj regarding my great uncle Mortko/Moritz/Morris Schmatnik, and through him some other descendents of the Schmatnik family in Israel.
After years of back and forth emailing, my daughter Emilia Blei, my sister Carolyn, and I are all going to the Stones of Remembrance ceremony in St. Polten this October. Note: my daughter is named after my grandmother Etel Blei Schmatnik, and I grew up hearing stories of life in Sadagora, where she was born in 1904. [image: Schmatnik Family Mortko Ernestine Elfriede Leopold-1923.jpeg] (photo- Mortko, his wife Ernestine and children Leo and Frieda) Mortko's father was my great grandfather Ioil Schmatnik, and his mother was Schlima Apfel, who died in 1892 at age 26 of dysentery. After her death, Ioil married Gittel Engler, and they had nine other children, including my grandfather Samuel Schmatnik. I have no idea why Mortko went to Vienna, and have not been able to find other information on his mother Schlima, except for her death record. Maybe I will be able to learn more on my trip!
