General: Construction of the Mishkan

Dear Rav Kornfeld,

Could I please get some direction to additional explanations of how
the Mishkan was erected, and what sort of site preparation was done?

And also I would like to know if the specific halacha for a Succah,
that it has to be built to withstand expected winds, that the Mishkan
was designed to the same standards? However per Pirkei Avos that
the smoke of the altar stayed straight up even with wind, perhaps the
Mishkan was exempt?

My friend - who worked in construction for years - was thinking that
the silver sockets could have had something sticking down into the
ground. I didn't think that is supported by the texts I've seen.

The Kollel replies:

The Mishkan was built, as is written in the Torah, with Adanim,
Berichim, etc. Nothing else is required, for otherwise the Torah
would have said more. No sort of site foundation is known to us. The
sockets are always described as a hollow box with no mention of
anything sticking into the ground.

Considering the weight of the lumber that was used for the walls, a
"Ru'ach Metzuyah" (ordinary wind) was probably not a problem. Also,
the structure was formed with an interlocking "Beri'ach" than ran
through the middle of the boards on three full sides, thus creating a
very firm structure.

In the event of stormy gusts that may have been strong enough to
cause the surrounding partitions to fall, it seems that they would
have just returned them to their places after the storm.

All the best,
Reuven Weiner
