I had something very similar happen with my installation of Darktable 2.0.7 on CentOS 7. It was caused by an update to a shared CSS file. I forget the exact name of the file, but I was able to find it by examining the Gtk messages that came up when I started Darktable from the command line. --

Those symptoms occur when GTK3 has been updated without darktable being updated to match. The red areas indicate that there's a problem with the layout, so CSS might be involved, but I more often see this when I update the OS from one release to the next (say, Ubuntu 17.04 to Ubuntu 17.10)

Actually, I've enclosed the "master" copy found in the /usr/share/darktable directory, but you should have your own copy in ~/.config/darktable. First of all, I suggest you to remove the ~/.config/darktable/darktable.css , copy locally the /usr/share/darktable one and run again the program
