Re: [darktable-user] DT can't access files on external hdd with special software

2022-01-14 Thread Terry Pinfold
I am glad it is fixed. It just reminds me of why I am allergic to Mac computers
and hate being under the control of Microsoft with Windows computers. I am
switching my Windows 7 computers to LINUX Mint and am very happy with what I am
seeing. I am stuck with Windows for work computers, because that is what they
dictate.

Okay so today an Apple expert was here for a lot of things. He also dove into
the dt problem. He fixed by giving full access to the ntfs conversion software,
something with Kernel.

So... problem solved!

Hallo Hieke,

what's about *write*-access to ntfs?

DT tries to write sidecars (*.xmp) in the folder of the raw-files.

Generally your problem seems not to be a issue of darktable but an issue
of the Mac-OS with the Windows-Filesystem; bad mix.

Hi there,

A few weeks ago we had a conversation about darktable on my Macbook Air (M1) not being able to
see (let alone import) photos from my external HDD that I had created on my Windows laptop. The tip was:
format it. The HDD is ntfs formatted so I bought and downloaded this license for ease of use and quickness:

The installation seems to be done correctly (I got this on screen message saying something like ‘All you
have to do now is restart your laptop and enjoy your ntfs files’).

What else can I do to make this work?

I didn’t download the latest version yet. Will it work on M1 Macs?
The installation notes say that Intel is required – can that be it? I can
hardly believe but I just needed to ask.

Tnx, I hope so too... I have the pop-ups in English (wich I prefer) but the
installation is done in Dutch automatically. I don’t want that. How can I make
dt ‘speak’ English to me? :-)

@developers: could you please rename ‘recursive directory’ into ‘subfolders’ or
whatever the correct English name is?
AND... please add info about the M1 macs on the installation page if possible.

untick the box. It didn’t help.

The software that I bought should make it possible to read the ntfs-formatted
disk (wich is possible outside of dt). I don’t know why dt doesn’t support that
too.

On the DT import function make sure recursive directory is selected. Probably
not your issue but I mention just in case

Hi there,

A few weeks ago we had a conversation about darktable on my Macbook Air (M1)
not being able to see (let alone import) photos from my external HDD that I had
created on my Windows laptop. The tip was: format it. The HDD is ntfs formatted
so I bought and downloaded this license for ease of use and quickness:
https://shop.paragon-software.com/277/?scope=checkout
<https://shop.paragon-software.com/277/?scope=checkout=226074=false=paragon2018>
=226074=false=paragon2018. The installation seems to be
done correctly (I got this on screen message saying something like ‘All you
have to do now is restart your laptop and enjoy your ntfs files’).

What else can I do to make this work?

I didn’t download the latest version yet. Will it work on M1 Macs? The
installation notes say that Intel is required – can that be it? I can hardly
believe but I just needed to ask.

Kind regards,

Hieke van Hoogdalem

Recursive directories means sub-folders. I am not sure why the term
recursive directory was chosen over the common term of sub-folders. I hope
you get your problem sorted.

You don't say if the machines are talking to each other. My first thing to look
at is can the M1 see the files on the Windows box? Using a standard file
manager/browser on the M1 navigate to the Windows box and the location of the
image files. Attempt to view them in a file viewer. If that doesn't work then
dt won't be able to work with the files either. Best then to consult the
experts in that area before attempting again with dt.

Well, better believe it. Darktable is developed by unpaid volunteers, who work
on what they want to work on *within the possibilities of available hardware*.

In order to get dt to work on M1 Macs, a developer has to have access to one
of those machines, and be willing to make the effort to port dt to it. Apple
is particularly unpleasant for this, as programs need to be signed and
notarised by Apple, which requires at least one of the developers to register
for 100$/year. (Strictly speaking, you can get an unsigned application to
work, but it's not fun for the end user...)

DT (official binary distribution) runs perfectly on Apple M1. On mine, since
over a year now.

[darktable-user] DT can't access files on external hdd with special software

2022-01-12 Thread Hieke van Hoogdalem
Hi there,

A few weeks ago we had a conversation about darktable on my Macbook Air (M1)
not being able to see (let alone import) photos from my external HDD that I had
created on my Windows laptop. The tip was: format it. The HDD is ntfs formatted
so I bought and downloaded this license for ease of use and quickness:
https://shop.paragon-software.com/277/?scope=checkout=226074=false=paragon2018.
The installation seems to be done correctly (I got this on screen message
saying something like ‘All you have to do now is restart your laptop and enjoy
your ntfs files’).

What else can I do to make this work?

I didn’t download the latest version yet. Will it work on M1 Macs? The
installation notes say that Intel is required – can that be it? I can hardly
believe but I just needed to ask.

Kind regards,

Hieke van Hoogdalem
