Well they just told me I need to update my version of Mint from 17.3 to
18.x. Bummer!

Mint is based on Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial) for which Pascal has darktable 2.2.4 in
his PPA. Maybe you have used the wrong U

That is most likely the problem. We moved some of the stuff in the header into
a dropdown menu in 2.2.0 so that the window doesn't get too wide. Can you try
updating?
