Re: [darktable-user] Best distro for DT?
I switched to Linux because of darktable 3 years ago. I have been playing with Linux on a separate PC the years before so had some beginners expirience - but I am still far away from admin qualities. I used Debian from 2008 onwards and Fedora from 2012 (Debian had some freezes of the desktop on the changed Hardware on that PC). For my desktop working PCs I decided to use Cinnamon Desktop and so naturally I tried Linux Mint. I'm happy with that - everything I needed to works fine, startup and install from a live DVD. I use LM17 which is a LTS version and thinking of upgrading to LM18 which is also LTS because of a GPS prog. Newest Version of dt is available thanks to Pascal and his PPA. -- regards Bernhard http://www.bilddateien.de Sakke K schrieb am 14.08.2016 um 10:32: I have new SSD-disk. First i install Windows 10. You can say a lot of good about archlinux but easy to install and to configure is not one of them. If you want archlinux, you can use 'architect linux' to install archlinux: https://sourceforge.net/projects/architect-linux/ Or if you want something more polished than anchlinux but still based on archlinux, there is manjaro: https://manjaro.org/ This is the best and most polished XFCE desktop. -- sknahT vyS darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.org
Re: [darktable-user] Best distro for DT?
Arch is my favourite distribution at the moment. It has a small core of packages required to make a working system and then you can install whatever else you want via the package management system. It isn't oriented around a particular desktop environment like GNOME or KDE so you can install one or the other, both or neither and go with something lightweight instead. It has very recent versions of the desktop environments, darktable and other popular software. The less popular choices are available via a gentoo - like Arch Build System. I didn't find it hard to install but I have quite a bit of Linux experience. It is easier than gentoo but there is no installer. You boot into a working Arch system and then follow an installation guide. The documentation is good. There are beginner's and installation guides and there is a specific guide to setting up dual boot with Windows both for EFI and old - style BIOS. Re: RE : [darktable-user] Best distro for DT?
Hi, I am the darktable co-maintainer on Fedora. I am actually releasing updated packages as soon darktable developers release a new version. Concerning Fedora, I could not find better words than sections "Features" "First" of page https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Foundations If you want a Gnome based machine, download Fedora Workstation. If you want to use another desktop environment like KDE Plasma, download the Fedora (KDE) Spin. You can find all of them into https://torrents.fedoraproject.org/ Have a nice day darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.org
Re: [darktable-user] Best distro for DT?
Hi, well, I wouldn't say that Arch is easy to install, there's lots to read. But the docs (Wiki) are great, and using Arch, you tend to learn a lot more about Linux than with other distros, where you just look at something that doesn't work helplessly and don't know what to do. Yes, I'd wholeheartedly agree there's no better distro out there for desktop use, and it always quickly has the latest DT updates, but I'd also add that it's not easy for Linux beginners. OTOH, when I started using Linux in the mid-nineties, there was no distro that was easier than Arch is today, and I managed, too. So, if you expect Windows/Mac-like point-and-click-and-(hopefully)-works, don't use Arch. If you don't, definitely give it a try.
