My install was from the openSUSE repositories rather than from the
regular library so this probably was a more advanced build despite still
being DisplayCAL 3.2.3.

The error message you are seeing is probably from dispwin, which is
called by the DisplayCAL GUI and needs to be updated. dispwin is part of
the Argyll suite of tools.
