You can grab the sources from git, look at the HTML version on the website 
(you found those already) and download the PDF linked from the top of 
https://www.darktable.org/resources/

The usermanual isn't built by default. So it's probably not shipped with those
packages. Actually, we even strip the usermanual's sources from release
tarballs.


This is no problem when it can be downloaded. I've found so far only the

My error (I think) was to use the file name again in the destination
rather than pointing to the directory itself.

If the destination directory is not the problem, it means the problem is the 
source one...
I am quite sure the path to your darktable documentation contains another 
symlink.
Check each directory (one by one) and create the symlink on the Desktop 
following a path without any other symlink.
I am using OpenSuse and the link to manual is /usr/share/doc/packages/
darktable-doc/darktable-usermanual.pdf
ln -s /usr/share/doc/packages/darktable-doc/darktable-usermanual.pdf /home//Desktop/
works fine!
You could also try to create the symlink using a function/shortcut of your file 
manager.

Try to create the softlink in a place different than Desktop
(for example /home/david)
and post the result.
