Re: [datameet] Shapefiles of Villages of Tamil Nadu

2018-08-23 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Nitin, Partha,

Can you raise one ticket/issue for each of your states to work on village
boundaries here:
*

And in that can you put in whatever details you already have about the
matter? For example, before coming to this group and posting your question
you surely must have checked at other places and found at least something
if not the whole thing. Maybe PDF maps of sub-districts, for example. That
is something a GIS/planning student can turn into a shapefile in a day for
you. Maybe you know exactly which office/department in that state is in
charge of officially maintaining the maps. These are all vital leads. so
please put them in your posting so that you maximise the chances of your
success.

The folks from datameet community who CAN help you, who have *succeeded* in
getting together village shapefiles of many other states so far, will be
better reached at that github repo, and more constructive things can happen
over there, like different leads can come in. On the mailing list I've seen
over a dozen separate requests for village boundaries for the same states
being made by now. The requesters should consider allying together to
achieve their common aims.

Q : "I've only joined just now so I have no clue about others who have also
requested for the same"
A : This is not a whatsapp group. It's an openly readable public forum on
the internet. You can search through all the past postings on this mailing
list going back almost a decade, over here:
 *. One simple search
might fetch you a lot of resources.

[datameet] story plug - How many athletics medals will India win at the Asian Games?

2018-08-23 Thread Shijith Kunhitty
Hi everyone, just sending a link to a data story I did on the Asian Games.

The athletics events at this year's Asian Games are starting this Saturday.
In the story I try to guess how many athletics medals India could win at
the Asian Games using past data. Chances are we could win fewer than we did
in 2014.

Here's the link to the story:
https://shijithpk.github.io/asian_games_athletics/index.html .

Parts of the story were earlier published in the Hindustan Times, just
putting it all in one place so it's easier to read.

Used data from IAAF.org for the story as well as IAAF's scoring tables
.

The python code used to scrape and analyse the data is available in the
github repo here: https://github.com/shijithpk/asian_games_athletics .

If anyone has any questions or feedback, do let me know! -thanks, shijith

YES,

It is good to have it in the common repository of the Group.

Provided there are no copyright issues. Which I do not think there would be
with a data of FACTS.

Hi Balsher, can you please share that CSV with the Group?
If It's a large file, you could place it on Github, or even Internet
Archive.

Devdatta
