You are only downloading tables from that link you shared right? Not actual

Google transliteration tools or ai4bharat transliteration tools might turn
 out helpful.

[datameet] Global Urban Area Project

2019-06-17 Thread Justin
Datameet! It has been a while! Hope everyone is doing well with their
projects and life! I am about to begin a project mapping urban areas
globally, back applying names, and hopefully populations. I created a pilot
proof of concept dataset for Guinea (*randomly picked a country in Africa).
I could start to process India as well, but it is a massive process and
want general feedback before I do so. please give me ideas, feedback, and
critique anything you think I can do better, or things I should add. I need
to explain my workflow for people to understand how this will be created,
but for the most part right now it is select by location, and score a cell
if it intersects urban data from a handful of sources. Names and
populations will come later, and be difficult... but for now, it is a POC.

[datameet] Pincode Mapping List/ Data/ Project

2018-09-28 Thread Justin
I've reviewed the majority of the resources here - Devdatta seems to have a
lot of data (*thank you!) and a few others posted some links/ resources
(*thanks!!). I'm wondering if we can create a quality detailed point
dataset for pincodes?

I wonder if there is a stable list to make sure we account for them all,
then if there is a way to link to lat/long or somehow formally request.

DATA.GOV.IN seems to have a slow start on this, but the quality is not
there as per the latitude/ longitude values
(https://data.gov.in/resources/all-india-pincode-directory-contact-details-along-latitude-and-longitude

). There is a list of quite a few
here:
https://data.gov.in/resources/villagelocality-based-pin-mapping-16th-march-2017

Has there been a stable list created thus far, or something being pushed
out by http://www.indiapost.gov.in/Pincode.aspx ?

Cheers,
Justin

[datameet] Re: 2018 India Village GIS Data Project

2018-04-09 Thread Justin
Dilip,
Thanks for sending this; I'm finalizing the detailed boundaries today/
tomorrow. Once finished, I will finalize the names fields. The LGD data
doesn't have all town/ village names, But I believe they are in the wards
tables, so some attributes can come from there. Also, I believe the 2011
census actually creates bad names for census towns. IE Canacona (Village)
and Canacona (Town). I believe Canacona (Town) is actually Chaudi
and Nagorcem - Palolem. So I believe the India census names locations based
on an important city, or its parent subdivision for census towns just for
reference or fromal govt services. But local people would consider the
location a different name. They would understand Canacona, but not think of
the main urban area as that, but I could be wrong (*probably am!?). But
just want to make sure I am not creating a census names dataset, this is
the actual villages (*not settlements either).

Thanks for all of your help! Talk soon,
Justin

2018-03-22 Thread Justin
okay; started to upload the data:
https://github.com/justinelliotmeyers/INDIA_2018_SHAPEFILE_BOUNDARIES

please give any feedback, poit out errors, what I did wrong, best way to
move forward, etc. This is v1, so I expect issues to exist, and missing
locations, bad spellings, code issues, etc.

I tried to clean it up as much as possible - in order to get this pushed
out before the weekend I dissolved to a grid to keep geometry size down. We
can review geometry after initial review of attributes.

I just threw everything in a repo; we can upload to a more formal project
after this first stae, just wanted to start.

Thanks!

[datameet] 2018 India Village GIS Data Project

2018-03-21 Thread Justin
I plan on trying to update individual states to 2018 standards/ amounts/
etc. I know this is a crazy idea, but I am going to start.

I have started with Goa, it has been a challenge. I thought I was going to
finish over two weeks ago, but just haven't had time and have been doing
more tracing of villages that what I thought I was going to have to do.

I am trying to align amounts with http://lgdirectory.gov.in/
 and http://nlrmp.nic.in/faces/masterReport/masterReport.xhtml

Sometimes these may disagree and may be missing towns, but I am trying to
make sure I account for those somehow. Once I finish, I will upload hoping
for feedback as per what I did wrong, am missing, or anything else.

I think a state-by-state way is the only way to successfully do this.
Trying to do all 6-8 lakh would be a nightmare, so breaking it down to
several hundred - a few thousand would be easiest and manageable.

Please let me know if you would like to help, start mapping a state, or
give any feedback, ideas, data, solutions, etc.

Thank you all so much!

Justin

I actually went to the presentation for the facebook addresses by Ilke

[datameet] Re: India GIS Data Update/ Questions

2017-09-19 Thread Justin
Dilip,
That has some nice data in it; but it isn't a 1-1 relationship and is
missing a lot of information. I would love to have a dataset that has both
2001/2011 information in it, but I honestly don't know if that would ever
be possible. The way the census bureau and the soi have village boundaries
and codes, they just do not work.

I am really hoping to create a full village dataset, but need help. I put a
bunch of data online for everyone to tinker with and see if it is correct,
or what is wrong with it.

I am hoping that the datameet people can team up with some of the mapbox
people and we can start to create a stable dataset - just not sure the best
way to implement such a project. We could even build pincodes in it and
have a working village, pincode, admin 1,2,3, etc dataset.

I know it is a crazy thought to build such a dataset, but I want to help
and think it can be done. Where do we start!?

[datameet] India GIS Data Update/ Questions

2017-08-22 Thread Justin
Hello Datameet! Haven't spoken to you all in a while. Several months ago I
shared a complete 2011 villages dataset. Has anyone used it, added any
metadata/ updates?

Has any open gis data come to light in India? Telanagana's new districts?
Any new admin 1,2,3,4 boundaries?

Any new neighborhood gis data?

Anyone have a trustworthy 2001>2011 census code table?

Thanks, talk soon!

[datameet] Census codes 2001 and 2011

2017-07-11 Thread Justin
The govt matched the codes, but it is incorrect. If you did it spatially, you
would run into more issues because any 2001 census GIS data would be more for
illustration purposes vs analysis.

Are you doing it based off of tables or GIS?

[datameet] India Village Shapefile Data - starting to upload the data so anyone may access

2016-12-30 Thread Justin
I am starting to upload all my India village data.

If terms are restrictive, it will not happen. Bhuvan's Terms are very
restrictive (see link on lower right of
page: http://bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in/bhuvan_links.php# ). Bhuvan data is low
quality, and outdated.

If there are no terms I put source. Government officials in India have not
responded to any e-mails I have sent. You will need to reach out to them as
per terms of use, metadata, copyright, etc.

Cheers,

Can anyone call the soi in their state and ask them? or could we get a

we would get a more current dataset, will all levels and attributes.

SR,
Thanks - have the data downloaded from both. can the vector data be

Devdatta, you know whats going on behind the scenes with the sites - you

thejeshgn.com
<https://archive.org/search.php?query=publisher%3A%22thejeshgn.com%22> - he
has the data too?? https://archive.org/details/IndiaVillageBoundaries

not sure why people from India aren't posting the data when they have it -
Is the govt restricting free data from being uploaded? Can it be posted ?
 https://archive.org/details/IndiaVillageBoundaries started, but stopped?
does everyone have all that data (for the entire nation) already? The
Mapbox people must have it!? Or am I the only one in the world with
several different full national level datasets for villages in India? This
cannot be true -

Can it be hosted on GitHub?

Re: [datameet] Re: Improving India road data on OpenStreetMap

2015-11-25 Thread Justin Meyers
Sarath,
I believe the data you posted is actually historical OSM data! When osm
first came out, several websites hosted it and split it up based on
country. I haven't looked at this data in a few years, but believe it is
very very old OSM data.

Cheers,
Justin

 Devdatta,
This is raw data that I converted from kml to shp. So it took me about
30 minutes to make sure the attributes came through properly. Cannot say
my source until I download the rest of the content from the site, before
they take it down. It seems like they put data on the internet, then try
to take it down (or hide it...). Not really sure why? I posted the Orissa
sample for you some time ago, but you never responded? I found official
data for Orissa as well, so converting the census pdfs to gis is a big
waste of time (took me a few days...).

As per the quality of this dataset, it is the best I have seen on a
national level. But if you look state by state, or really want quality
data, then this isn't what you want. I would call this dataset a rough
 start.

 I posted a update about Bihar (
 https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/datameet/QuP4Tt4n0_g) and that
data is amazing, this data doesn't hold a candle to it. Too bad the
government doesn't want help from the experts ;)

 Justin,

 Just one comment:

Locations is a loose concept, and mapped in wikimapia it is even more
vague. As elsewhere, in India, words like location, settlement or even
village mean different things to different people. Census follows a
rigorous definition, using 'revenue villages' as the main unit, with
'forest villages' in a few cases. In wikimapia, one may see tags for
hamlets that are subsets of revenue villages (but have a different
name), but their data will be part of the census data of the revenue
 village.

The last little problem with the census data is that it is missing

wikimapia are crowd projects, I believe some of the data there is
  correct.

[datameet] Re: village boundary layer for Karnataka

2014-09-10 Thread Justin Meyers
Sharad,
Thanks for uploading this. I have looked at this and compared to a few
other datasets. I have a question about a location in your dataset and how
it lines up with census data/ codes.

LOC_CODE: 15103000 NAME:Krishnarajasagara Nac

If you go to the Census Digital Library
(http://www.censusindia.gov.in/DigitalLibrary/Tables.aspx) and look at the
2001 table for the Mandya District, the first records in the table read:

STATE DISTRICT SUB-DISTT TOWN_VILL WARD EB LEVEL NAME TRU 29 22
 0 0 DISTRICT Mandya Total 29 22 0 0 DISTRICT Mandya
Rural 29 22 0 0 DISTRICT Mandya Urban 29 22 42205000 0
0 TOWN Krishnarajasagara (NAC) Urban 29 22 42205000 1 0 WARD
Krishnarajasagara
(NAC) - Ward No.1 Urban
I have seen SUB-DISTT codes of before for states, districts, and very
large cities (i.e. Hyderabad) - but this is something new!? I believe the
census table is wrong. But something that is kinda throwing me off as well
is your data has two of these, both with identical records, and the same
Taluk, but you can see i think it should be split (but not certain)?

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-KIM29wpLGWs/VBBjJABRYAI/ALY/46VKKJX5oFE/s1600/mandya_error.jpg

a last thing to throw in the mix is that in a different census gis dataset,
the north part has :2922000302365700 Chikkayarahalli and the south part
has 2922000402378200 Hongahalli - these are both in the census table as
well...

Can anyone make sense of this!??

Thanks! Justin

Hope this is useful. Would be nice if folks who use it post information

I should mention that we paid for the layer but would like to make it
freely available. Ideally, if it were ported to Google maps, that would
help a lot of people. But that would also need better geo-rectification.

Re: [datameet] Re: Delhi Locations and Questions

2014-09-09 Thread Justin Meyers
Devdatta, Shafeeq, and Arun,
Thanks for your help. I figured this would be pretty tricky... I am
trying to put together a gis layer of these in polygon format (i have
around 80% of Delhi done, but cannot find data for New Delhi, or Central
Delhi). I attached a pic in my initial post. I have seen numerous gis
layers for wards, districts, villages, etc floating around on the web, but
they seem incorrect (so I am trying to build it myself). Do you know where
i could locate a official map of villages for central and new delhi? or
any gis data, or perhaps a list of villages with their respected latitude/
longitude?

Thanks!
Justin

There is usually two parts to city place names:

 1) Suburb/Area: This is the larger area and is well known to any resident
of the city. Such areas are also served by a major post office, police
station and may have its unique pincode. eg. Defence Colony, Paschim VIhar,
 Gurgaon City Centre.
This name usually follows the name of the post office serving it.

 2) Neighborhood: This is the more specific locality within the suburb
and may be known to only the local residents. Neighborhoods may have their
own internal addressing scheme defined by the local resident welfare
association eg. Ram Colony, Kalu Sarai, B4 Vasant Kunj..
Neighbourhoods are very loosely defined and are officially defined only
in the electoral rolls, where voter lists are prepared and voting booths
 have to be allocated.

All this is based on personal observations, someone else can probably
 expose this dark corner better.

I am beyond confused!?! Does anyone on this forum live in any of these
larger cities? How do you refer to where you live or where you are from?

The real fun starts outside the city. My current postal address is my
name followed by the name of the village :)

 Hi Justin,

There are many different systems for transliterating Hindi script although
the GoI has officially adopted the Hunterian system. I would guess that
spellings originating from local offices are more likely to be
non-Hunterian, idiosyncratic, phonetic, etc., although not necessarily
wrong. However, they are probably more likely to have outright misspellings
as well because workers at local offices tend to have less command of
English compared to workers at the Centre (and publications from the Centre
 are probably proofread more closely).

I would opt to use spellings from the central government publication
primarily because they are the official, standardized version. I would only
use the local spellings if I was creating some output specifically for use

Do people use these names when discussing locations within Delhi? Are
these villages considered neighborhoods? Where can I find a good map of
village boundaries for Central and New Delhi? I have written their
government offices for the past few weeks, and they do not respond to my
 e-mails...

Also, the names in either of the lists don't really follow the 2001 or
the 2011 census data. It seems as if spelling can go a few different ways
in India; i.e. Jaunti vs. Jonti, Qutab Pur vs. Qutub Pur, Jafrabad
vs. Jaffrabad. I think trusting a name from a local government office is
slightly more correct than from a national agency (is this a naive way to
 think?).

 Thanks for any information!

 Sharad,

I have worked with GADM over the years and know the pros and cons (it is
one of the few global datasources that is somewhat consistent and free,
however, there is NO documentation, NO support, NO updates, and is heavily
generalized, etc). So I call it junk because there is better data out
there. Could you share your Karnataka shapefiles?

Thanks!

Re: [datameet] Census 2001 Tahsils Shapefile (5,461 records)

2014-08-05 Thread Justin Meyers
Devdatta,
This is raw data that I converted from kml to shp. So it took me about 30
minutes to make sure the attributes came through properly. Cannot say my
source until I download the rest of the content from the site, before they
take it down. It seems like they put data on the internet, then try to
take it down (or hide it...).

I would call this dataset a rough
start.

I posted a update about Bihar

data is amazing, this data doesn't hold a candle to it. Too bad the

Devdatta,
Sorry I didn't type that up. I just finished processing it and was excited

2,739 features. Initially I thought the data was relevant to 2001, but
maybe it is 1991 (I have no metadata, the Indian government does not
respond to my e-mails (I have sent at least a dozen, but they do not
respond)). I am not certain of the exact source, it is hosted by the
Bhuvan (who do not respond to emails either).

As per any processing, I took the data and sorted the attributes (it was a
long string all attached as one - so i split it and created the fields).

Any other questions? If you know of a more current dataset please post!!

Re: [datameet] Updated Taluk Shapefile!!

2014-07-17 Thread Justin Meyers
Devdatta,
Thanks for the quick response. I thought the files originated from the
Survey of India, but wasn't certain. I started to create a villages
dataset, but the tehsils do not really align with what the 2001 census
villages state their respected tehsil parent is... So I am assuming all of
the data from the gevernment is a mix bag (spelling may be off, codes may
be wrong/ outdated, data may be mixed between years). What a mess!?!?! As
per rectifying and creating maps based off the PDFs, I'm not sure I would
do that. The lines they have for boundaries are very, very generalized.
Also, I tried (a few years ago) to line them up with actual vector data,
and there is a huge shift (i was using WGS84 vector data, so maybe I should
have reprojected).

Maybe it would be best to start top down or bottom up. So either build a
dataset from villages up to states or states down to villages.

Thoughts? We need some official data though (which seems impossible to
find...). But anything is possible, right!?!

Cheers,
Justin

If the original source you mentioned is Bhuvan, then the files came
directly from Survey of India. I have used those files before, and as you
mentioned there were only some 2000 Odd features in it.

There are not from any specific era. Some tehsils in the file were created
post 2001, while others created in the 90's were not present.

The only exhaustive source I know, is the Census Administrative Atlas.
They have maps in PDF format, not in shapefiles, and I had used it to
create the district shapefiles which are shared on the datameet github
 repos.
Sometimes I feel I should get started on digitizing those pdfs. It
shouldn't take more than 40 hours.

this data (most likely 2001, potentially before). Scale is 1:250,000.

#OPENINDIA

I have tried to reach out to numerous government agencies, but they do not
respond to e-mails. They do not want to help (or cannot). I have
suggested for data to be open at data.gov.in
