Re: [datameet] Getting started with maps

2016-06-20 Thread Devdatta Tengshe
Hi Manas & Kavita,

Mapping is a wide field, and there are many things, and many different ways
of achieving what you want to.

At it's essence, You would collect or create data, and then using a GIS
software, you would make a Map. The map could be a fixed map, of a
particular area, which would be printed or shared as an Image or PDF file,
or it could be a dynamic web map, where the user can interact with it, i.e.
zoom, pan, click on features to get more information etc.

That was just the essence, and as they say, the Devil is in the details.

Where do you get the data from? Broadly speaking, in the following ways:

   - The easiest is when someone else has the data, and shares it with you.
For example, a Municipality shares its data publicly, and you use that to
   create a map.
   - You create it yourself. This could be by Drawing on top of a
Satellite Image (called Digitization), or by going on the filed with a GPS
device, and collecting the Lat-long, or By getting raw data, and creating
location data by matching it with something else. (eg of the last is, say
you have a list of addresses, and by a process called Geocoding, you
   convert the addresses to Lat-long)
   - Or Thirdly, the data already exists in some other form somewhere, and
you convert it to your required format. An example of this is Scraping a
government site, and getting data in a single Machine Readable format.

I'm just scraping the surface, and this field is full of Nuances.

I had taken a session on this, last year, at the Pune chapter of Datameet.
You can see the notes here:
http://datameet.org/2015/09/11/datameet-pune-second-meetup-lets-talk-mapping/
.Rasagya had taken some beautiful notes, which can be seen here:

Do let me know if you need any more details
Regards,
Devdatta

2016-06-20 Thread Kavita Arora
Hi Manas (and others)

I would like to help organize a "Getting Started with Maps"
meetup/session/event if there is enough interest -- even though the session
would be targeted for newbies -- we'd need some experts and intermediate
mapping folks to help with instruction, troubleshooting, etc.

I can provide a venue with an overhead projector and high speed internet
connection with plenty of desk space, and to make it accessible for
everyone, we could even start with a free session. Would anyone be
interested in getting together to organize such a meet?

please do feel free to email me directly at kklindo...@gmail.com if you
have any questions,

thanks again
