Right. There. There is one thing I learnt for my whole life when I organized DebConf6. Those that were around back then will surely back me on this: Don't push a bid if you are not _CERTAIN_ you have a good team with whom you can _really_ share the load. It is not impossible to put up a DebConf mostly by yourself. But, believe me, you don't want to do it. Do you really want to end up with a face as mine? A good place to hold the conferences and to have hacklabs is very important. Good accomodation is quite important. Nice good food cannot be overlooked. But... If you don't have a good team that shares a vision and can work together, you won't get anywhere. Work on that before anything else. > and even though I probably might have managed to do it if Bratislava > was the only bid, I don't want to pretend my bid is better at the > moment. We should go back to Europe soon, it makes sense in so many ways. But Brazil does indeed have a mature, strong bid. So, I hope you can do it in 2020. Talk with people from nearby cities, even if not from your "local" team. Talk with us (debconf-team). We will provide comments and help along the way even if you are not a formal bid, and even if it's mid-year. signature.asc Description: PGP signature

This is how we're doing it this year. I'm hoping that next year we'll have at least two strong bids, we might have to do some better marketing at DebConf to lure^Wentice more people into proposing bids. > also I think bid teams should be clear what they want and offer. saying > "we might be bidding but maybe not" or some such is not helpful. > > also why should we invest our time in this bid if *they* are not clear > if they want to be bidding? As far as I'm concerned, we have a sufficient understanding of where the bid teams stand in order to have a productive meeting and a high likelihood of reaching a consensus/conclusion on who should host DebConf19. Even though Bratislava is really gunning for DC20, and even though it's more or less a dry run for their actual bid, it is also valuable to assess their current readiness in the (unlikely) event that the Curitiba bid doesn't work out. -Jonathan -- ⢀⣴⠾⠻⢶⣦⠀ Jonathan Carter (highvoltage) ⣾⠁⢠⠒⠀⣿⡁ Debian Developer - https://wiki.debian.org/highvoltage ⢿⡄⠘⠷⠚⠋ https://debian.org | https://jonathancarter.org ⠈⠳⣄ Be Bold. Hi Holger On 04/01/2018 18:16, Holger Levsen wrote: > there's only one bid on that page?! It's a dry run for Bratislava (I suppose the 'damp' refers to it being slightly less than a dry run). The meeting still needs to take place in order to ensure that the Curitiba bid is valid and that the rest of the checks and balances that occur during this meeting still happens. For Bratislava, this gives them a chance to have their bid scrutinized, even though they really intend to bid for next year. It might seem like a bit of a rouse, but it's important to confirm that Curitiba's bid is valid and that there are no showstoppers. Currently the confidence in the Curitiba bid is really high though so if you want to see it as just a confirmation meeting, I guess that's not completely unfair, but in reality it's a bit more than that.
