My sighted tech uses TeamViewer to help me remotely. It's accessible to him.
That's all that counts, but I'm concerned about its stability.

What do you think of TeamViewer?

2020-04-24 Thread John J. Boyer
Hello,

I am working with a local tech on installing a desktop. He installed TeamViewer
so he could help me remotely. What have been your experiences with this
software?
Can it be run in the background? My experience is that it has made things
worse. My tech can remote in and run Gnome, but I can't run it from the
keyboard. That
hss hapened before - with NVDA on Windows 10.

Thanks,

Braille display jamming in Orca and Mate

2020-05-13 Thread John J. Boyer
Hello Everyone,

Occassionally either Orca or the desktop will cause the display to jam. It just
keeps showing the same thing, no matter what I do on the keyboard. Is there a
way
to restart Mate without rebooting? I am using lightdm. If I kill mate-session
lightdm asks me to sign in again. This may not be a good idea. I can tell when
Orca
is
responsible for the jam because it doesn't respond to Insert+Space.

Thanks,

How do I set up a desktop in Mate?

I got disgusted with the way Microsoft keeps messing up my computers with its

nothing. I would like something like the Windows desktop with first-letter
navigation to the apps I use most, the trash, Etc. What are the steps for

Re: The mate-user-guide is inaccessible.

2020-05-20 Thread John J. Boyer
Hello,

All right, I can use yelp, but the procedure is rather weird. I have Debian
Buster. Originally it was CLI only. I first tried Gnome, but that kept crashing
and
burning. Mate is much better. I have a Focus 40 Braille display. When I start
yelp I can arrow down from the top. Things flash on the display, much too fast
to
read. Pressing the forward advance button does nothing, but if I press the back
button on the display I will get to something. Then pressing the forward button
enables me to read the screen. I can even press buttons and links to go to
topics and read those.

I've gotten used to having to use some weird maneuvers to get to things on the
GUI. Some of that may be due to Orca. I think that Orca and Mate should behave
the
same on all distros.

Thanks,
John

Keyboard freezing

Hello,

Any ideas why my keyboard might suddenly freeze up? I have Debian Bullseye,
Brltty 6.0, Mate and Orca.
I was forwarding an email with mutt. the Braille display said mail sent. Then
no response to any keypress.
I had to use the power button to turn the machine off and then back on. It said
Screen not in text mode. i had to ssh in from another machine to reboot. It is
OK now. It had been up for 64 days.

I am using Mate with Debian Bullseye. However, the version of Debian doesn't

Please! I need a new brltty 6.4 package for Debian Bookworm.

2022-04-28 Thread John J. Boyer
Hello,

For some time brltty has been becoming unresponsive on mutt. Just now it became
unresponsive on the title of a book I was trying to download from Bookshare.
In both cases, when I went to a console where root was loggee in and pressed
up arrow brltty was restarted. there is also the problem that brltty does not
do word wrap. This is a regression from all previous Debian versions.

If making a new package from the current brltty repository is too much work,
what can I do to solve these problems?

Thanks,
John

Hello Samuel,

I received a message from Dave Mielke. He says that nobody else is having the
problem with brltty becoming unresponsive. So this must be a Debian Bokworm
problem.
The word-wrap problem is due to a bug. A new version of brlty, 6.5, will be out
in a couple of weeks.

How can I get usable information with current whois?

2022-08-23 Thread John J. Boyer
When I type
whois domainname
It gives me a lot of stuff, with much of it redacted, meaning it isn't shown.
It used to tell me about the domain name, including how long it was valid.
Why was the previous version mesed up? The man page is confusing. What do I
type to get information that I got last year?

Thanks,
John
