It's straight from the tarball PermitRootLogin yes There are no other users - haven't been able to set any up all /var/logs/* are empty so no help in there I wonder whether PermitEmptyPasswords no could be the problem? any one done a tarball based install

It pings OK and asks for a password in response to the SSH [EMAIL PROTECTED] tried ssh -v but didn't really understand the output except that it could not authenticate using rsh or dsh I suppose that's because it doesn't know my key yet. Will restart in linux and look at the log /Dave
