Same here, had a slug running etch from a regular USB HD for more than
half a year, all set up with disk labels in fstab etc. After an update
around three weeks ago it refuses booting. Haven't really had time to
play with it since then.

Did you remember to edit the /etc/fstab on your USB key to match the
partition scheme, or did you use the same partition scheme as the
instructions?
