make-kpkg --initrd and it installed and booted without any
problems. I don't know what has changed other than the newer kernel, but
the problem seems to have gone away.

p.s. Is this the right list for this sort of thing or should
tly - perhaps it could be made to detect
whether any initrd changes need to be made and handle them accordingly. This
message is sent in the interest of improving Debian.
I am assuming that initrd is really the issue and that I am
not on a wild goose chase, which is certainly possible.
