The problem is somewhat easily located and fixed by hand,
but I really think the cdrom should work out of the box,
So the question is, should we default /dev/cdrom to the first
CD-ROM drive if none is used during the installation,
That's my vote.
or not set
it at all in this case?

If the user is not using CDs for the installation, there is no
reason dbootstrap needs to know

That is one of the things I truly hate with distribs. Please, don't set
/dev/cdrom to anything during the install!
if /dev/cdrom exists
leave it alone
elif there is only one CD-ROM drive
point /dev/cdrom to it
And what if there are multiple CDROMs in a system? What if they have a
regular CDROM, a DVD, and a burner, or just a burner and DVD?
I really wish distrib's would give users the choice of which

Why? You can always reset it manually, and having it default to

How many new users to linux (we are discussing installs here after all) do
you know of that know

No, I think we're doing the right thing. If the user doesn't install
from CD-ROM, we don't make the link. If the user is installing from
CD-ROM and there are more than one, we have them pick, and set
/dev/cdrom accordingly.
This bug should be closed, IMHO. It's invalid.

Not many. But leaving it unset is equally bad, as they would have
to go trolling through /dev and /proc to find their CD-ROM drive
