Of course, eth1 should be replaced by the interface name of your
wireless card.
When you use Knoppix, you can probably do dmesg|more to
installed Ubuntu and in worked perfectly. I kind of wanted to use Debian
though. Any suggestions on my next step?

The ESSID is the name given to the wireless network you plan to use.
I'm surprised that, with Knoppix, using 802.11b is working.
