Bug#514016: cdebootstrap - packages with symlinks to dirs (libc6) can lead to writes outside the new root

2010-01-24 Thread Steve Langasek
severity 514015 important
severity 514016 important
thanks

While there are many good arguments made here about why (c)debootstrap
should handle these symlinks safely, fundamentally, if you can install two
packages at the same time that disagree about whether a given path is a
symlink or a directory, there's a bug in those packages. All co-installable
packages need to agree on symlinks and directories, otherwise installing a
package that uses a symlink, followed by installing a package that uses a
directory, then removing the package that shipped the symlink will leave
orphaned files on the filesystem that dpkg won't be able to find anymore.
And using relative symlinks instead of absolute symlinks won't fix this,
either.

So *that* bug should be treated as RC, wherever it occurs, but I don't think
we should treat this bug in *debootstrap as RC.

Comments/Problems:

The motherboard is an ASUS M2V, with both VIA K8T890 and VT8237A
chipsets. It has a Marvell 88SE6121 Serial ATA controller on-board,
and some other devices i didn't try.

The first problem came with the network card. It's an on-board
Attansic L1 Gigabit ethernet. Lspci shows an Unknown device 1969:1048
(rev. 04). I tried out an Ubuntu Edgy 6.10 amd64 installer and didn't
detected it either, but i was able to install a minimal console
system, and install and compile the driver by hand. I obtained the
driver from the ASUS homepage. I downloaded V0.1.40.6 gnu/linux
driver. I downloaded the kernel sources using a laptop and a usb stick
(i downloaded with ubuntu patches, does it care?), i compiled it, and
compiled the Attansic L1 gigabit ethernet driver module, called
atl1.ko. Then i modprobe atl1 and voilá. Network was running.

But that's Ubuntu, and i don't like it, i only used it to try to
explain what was going on (since it's based on Debian). I like Debian
(though i'm not a pro), and the installer has been fancy easy to use
for me for years, this is my first problem with incompatibilities.

The second, and last, problem came with the serial ata driver. Debian
etch installer RC1 did'n recognized the sata driver, a Marvell
88SE6121. lspci shows a Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Unkown device
6121 (rev. b1). So i couldn't install it. I tried some of the modules
from the offered list (sata_via, sata_mv, and all the via o amd i saw,
even those that sounds like marvell).

I suppose you are busy people, thank you very very much for your libre gift.

Bye,

Juan.

Bug#565639: SunBlade 1000 installation report - boot fails after installation

As the installation itself works fine I would guess this is not an
installer problem, but a kernel issue. Maybe it leaves the hardware in an
 incorrect state for the reboot.

Have you tried a cold boot of the installed system?

Adding kernel team for comment: it looks like the value returned by
uname -m has changed from 'sparc64' in kernel 2.6.26 to 'sparc' in
2.6.30 (and, probably, later ones). This breaks SILO, which uses this
value to determine what first-stage bootloader to install, as a result
the sparc machines installed with current daily installer builds turn
unbootable by the end of installation. Please confirm that this change
is not a result of some Debian-specific patch or build procedure, as
it should be reported upstream if that's not the case.

For reference:

ju...@debian:~$ uname -a
Linux debian 2.6.26-2-sparc64-smp #1 SMP Thu Nov 5 03:34:29 UTC 2009 sparc64
GNU/Linux
ju...@debian:~$ uname -m
sparc64

~ # uname -a
Linux debian 2.6.30-2-sparc64 #1 Sat Sep 26 07:26:31 UTC 2009 sparc GNU/Linux
~ # uname -m
sparc

I've confirmed that forcing the machine type by running 'silo -u -f'
makes the machine bootable again.

Best regards,
