Package: partman-base

Hi,

I wanted to install kFreeBSD variant of Debian squeeze from
http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/kfreebsd-i386/daily/monolithic/mini.iso
downloaded today (2010-03-14).

All went well until manual partitioning:

 - /dev/hda1 primary ntfs 26GB
 - free space 3GB

When I select to partition the free space, select size (3GB) and type
of the partition (primary), I get this error message:

  !!! Partition disks

   ??? ???

  Go Back Continue

Yes, it is correct, six questionmarks. Behind the dialog window I can
see the text Computing the new st ...and the rest is obstructed by
the dialog. When I continue (or go back), the partitioning menu is
empty (like not showing any partitions at all):

  Guided partitioning
  Undo changes to partitions
Finish partitioning and write changes to disc

No clue on tty4 at this stage. However, when I go back to the main
menu and select to partition disks again, nothing happens (I am
immediately returned to the main menu), but syslog now reads:

  Mar 14 18:35:32 main-menu[117]: INFO: Menu item 'partman-base' selected

  Mar 14 18:35:33 main-menu[117]: (process:1184):

Looking at the attached partman log I would say it wants to use the
ext2 filesystem by default for the new partition and switching to ufs
does not work very well.

Re: ERROR EN INSTALACION

2011-02-12 Thread Otavio Salvador
Jose,

This mailing list is an English one and most people here do not speak
or understand Spanish (me included).

I will try to help you in any case from the error message you included
on the text. Read bellow.

2011/2/7 José Villa Ruiz jvillar...@gmail.com:
...
El error es el siguiente:  [ 4975353 ] Failed to load image
 advansys/mcode.bin err -2
    [ 4975567 ] scsi host0: error:
 init_state 0x1f, warn 0xfffe, error 0x0
...

It seems it *can* be a missing firmware since we removed non-free
firmwares from Debian main.

There're UNOFFICIAL images that include those at:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/

Please give it a try.

script that the former calls, and then write a d-i-specific script?

I'd say to ask for the extraction of script since we have no use for
ini-functions on d-i itself up to now.

Re: Virtualbox Squeeze guest network client failure

2011-02-12 Thread Jan de Haan
Thanks for your reaction and sugestion, Otavio. It doesn't seem likely
though:

this is likely a kernel issue with your NIC.

I tested this by changing the (virtual) hardware type of the nic of the
Debian
Squeeze guest from PCnet-FAST III (Am79C973) to Intel PRO/1000 T Server
(82543GC),
commenting out the first eth0 in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
and setting
the eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces back from auto to allow-hotplug.

No effect. The same bug (no dhcp supplied address acquired on the nic)
showed up.

Changing from allow-hotplug to auto also remedied this.

I'll try this evening putting a pre-up sleep 5 in interfaces and report
back.

Sincerely,

Jan.

Bug#587046: proposal for a workaround

2011-02-12 Thread Guntbert Reiter
If it is not (yet) feasible to fix the behavior of tasksel when it is
removing a task then I suggest to drop the remove command for now. The
first sentence in the man page (tasksel - a user interface for
installing tasks) implies that it wasn't originally meant for removing
at all.

Comments/Problems:

I had to use Squeeze/testing instead of Lenny/stable because of the
H700 controller.

I have a box with Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5709, this worked fine with
the binary drivers provided separately from the Debian installer:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/firmware/testing/current/firmware.tar.gz
I used a solution similiar to this one to provide firmware during netboot:
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/NetbootFirmware

The loaded driver is:
kern.log.1:1972:Aug 13 15:57:11 zeus kernel: [2.122809] bnx2
:02:00.1: firmware: requesting bnx2/bnx2-mips-09-5.0.0.j3.fw

Bug#572803: marked as done (Module pata_via missing from Lenny d-i kernel)

Package: debian-installer
Version: 20090123lenny6
Severity: important

My bug report boils down to this:

The pata_via module is apparently excluded from the kernel of the Lenny
installer.
And I don't know how I could work around that.

The full story:

I tried to install Lenny (5.03) on a machine with an Asrock G965M-S motherboard:
http://www.asrock.com/MB/overview.asp?Model=G965M-S

The board has SATA support and a (legacy) PATA IDE controller. I have
a PATA harddisk and DVD drive hooked up to the PATA IDE controller
(since I do not have any SATA drives).

But the Lenny installer can neither find my harddrive nor the DVD
drive. It seems that the PATA IDE controller is not detected or not
supported.

The PCI device identifier of the controller is 1106:0415, i.e. vendor
VIA Technologies, Inc., device: PATA IDE Host Controller.

The pata_via module seems to support this controller:
http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/PATA_VIA.html

But the pata_via module is not available in the Lenny d-i kernel. I
can neither modprobe it or locate the *.ko file.

I successfully installed OpenSUSE on the machine (which detected the
controller and loaded the pata_via module).

But I would much rather prefer to install Debian.

ext4 is a sane default and valid choice for linux-2.6 = 2.6.32
It is the fs that the linux-2.6 team recommends as default
choice for squeeze. ext4 is a safe choice and maintained
upstream in the stable 2.6.32 tree.

I have been told that current dpkg may be a blocker thus
maintainers added to cc.

Comments/Problems:

I am on a university network that requires user authentication (via an
html page) on boot, so I was unable to do a network install because
there was no way for me to login in the debian-installer.

1. Might I suggest adding w3m as an optional installer module, at the
very least for the netinst image, so users can authenticate and proceed
with the install. Perhaps this is possible by using the rescue mode of
the CD, but I do not could I have done that in the rescue mode before
proceeding with the intall?

2. After installation I had no mirrors in my /etc/apt/sources.list
(aside from security.debian.org, commented out). Instead of omitting
the mirror when it is unreachable, perhaps ask the user whether or not
he/she would like the chosen mirror added as a commented-out entry in
sources.list.

Other comments:
I used the Expert non-gui install, and everything else worked perfectly.
:)

Bug#584995: #584995 Failed to create ext4 filesystem

2011-02-12 Thread Miguel Figueiredo
hi,

regarding the bug you reported, can you try the latest release - Debian
Squeeze - and report if the problem still persists?

I have done several installations with ext4 (on i386 and amd64) and always
successful.
We would like to close (if solved) this report or analyse deeper in case you
still have problems with ext4.

Proposed d-i fixes on sparc for 6.0.1

2011-02-12 Thread Jurij Smakov
Hello,

I would like to push a couple of fixes into 6.0.1 which prevent people
from completing the installation on a wide array of sparc machines:

http://bugs.debian.org/608516:
niu network driver is not included in the installer udebs. This
prevents network detection during the installation on newer T2+ sparc
systems. Proposed patch is committed to git:
http://git.debian.org/?p=d-i/linux-kernel-di-sparc-2.6.git;a=commit;h=255af4217d51fc32eeb0b844884a7244656b0675

http://bugs.debian.org/610906
pata_cmd6x (and other pata drivers) are missing from installer
initrd. This prevents CD-ROM drive detection during installation,
making install from any CD media impossible (and, unfortunately, there
is no simple workaround - the only way to avoid this is to netboot).
Proposed patch is committed to git:
http://git.debian.org/?p=d-i/debian-installer.git;a=commit;h=be086ccd9915f029a5de5b7fc1829fdab80f0a67

I would like your blessing to upload these changes to stable.

Thanks.

I have built a live-cd with an installer included, but
whenever I start debian installer I cannot see any buttons,
since d-i window is intended to be ran in fullscreen mode
with no gnome pannels (e.g. taskbar), nor window decoration present.

As such it becomes impossible to progress forward through the installation
unless I manage to position the d-i window to hide window decoration
and pannels.

Hello folks,

I have prepare some branches that has what I am intending to upload to
stable-proposed-updates. The modules I have changed are the following:

grub-installer
linux-kernel-di-sparc-2.6
tasksel
cdebconf
debootstrap
kernel-wedge

Please take a look and comment on those. If you think anything is
missing please say so.

This should probably be uploaded once the update kernel for 6.0.1 is

Please include debian-installer as well, I've committed a patch

Thanks for doing this.

The below shouldn't be assumed to be an ack or nack for the particular
uploads at this point.

  grub-installer

There doesn't appear to be a squeeze branch for this listed on gitweb;
for a stable update, the hurd fixes wouldn't be appropriate for
instance.

  linux-kernel-di-sparc-2.6

This should probably be uploaded once the update kernel for 6.0.1 is
 available?

Yes; or at least it will need rebuilding once a final(ish) kernel for
6.0.1 is in place; Dann's often uploaded lkdi-* nearer to the point
release to get it built against the kernel we're including.

  tasksel

Would this include all of the changes between 2.88 and 2.89, or just
some subset? As I think I've mentioned before, changes which might
affect what ends up on CD1 for any given CD set worry me, particularly
given the last minute problems we had for 6.0.0 with getting the release
notes on to the CDs and trying to get all of the packages required for
KDE CD1 to fit on a single CD for some architectures.

  cdebconf
  debootstrap
  kernel-wedge

Please include debian-installer as well, I've committed a patch
 targeting 6.0.1.

I'd imagine this would want to be uploaded closer to the point release,
or at least we'll need to rebuild it later on to pick up any further
builds of lkdi-* or other udebs.

Regards,

Adam

This is because the last configured one that used db_title was man-db.

I think I fixed it in grub-installer. Untested thought.

Can I test this with a recent enough daily image or is it more
complicated?

Bug#613099: installation-reports: Installation Report - Debian Squeeze 6.0 amd64 cd1 on Thinkpad T61

2011-02-12 Thread Christian PERRIER
Quoting Jimmy Wu (jimmywu...@gmail.com):

 1. Might I suggest adding w3m as an optional installer module, at the
very least for the netinst image, so users can authenticate and proceed
with the install. Perhaps this is possible by using the rescue mode of
the CD, but I do not could I have done that in the rescue mode before
 proceeding with the intall?

It would mean developing a udeb for w3m, integrate it in D-I, etc,
etc.

For something that's quite a corner case, imho.

So, well, I somehow doubt this will happenbut I may be wrong and
someone may step up and do the work..:)

This is expected in a non-networked situation. How could we ask (and
check about a mirror if there's no network? Even if we want to add an
entry for a mirror, we have to ask abou tit, which means also testing
it.

I also very much doubt that what you suggest is likely to happen as it
would change the whole logic of choose-mirror.
