The “unknown” part is the key here. It seems mips64el is lacking arch
detection for malta. I have a tentative fix that I still need to check.

I'm unable to install from debian-live-9.0.1-i386-mate.iso without internet.
It's 2017 year, is not it. Every Ubuntu had this functionality.

The ethernet card on Arndale board is a USB-based ethernet card. It needs
USB3503.ko to function correctly.
Without the said driver, the installer can't detect any ethernet card.

We also encountered the bug, and to me, it seems to be caused by the
systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service, shown as "Create Volatile Files and
Directories". This is because /tmp is listed as "D" in
/usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf, which means its contents gets removed
when /bin/systemd-tmpfiles
I re-installed u-boot on the uSDcard. And with that, it booted up a treat.
So somehow the u-boot binary on the uSDcard is getting clobbered in the
installation process.
