Bug#1055806: installation-reports: Installer doesn't recognize laptop's SSD, but calamares does

2023-11-12 Thread Pokoz Martinez
Hi Cyril and Pascal,

Thank you both for the fast response.

Cyril, I have just tested the .iso you attached to the bug report you
referred to, and indeed that installer detects my UFS disk no problem!

Thank you again so much for the fast response and for all the work you do.
I will rest assured now that this problem is known, and hopefully this
report also contributed my small grain of sand to the Debian effort!!

I hope you have a great rest of day,

Jessie.

Hi Jessie, and thanks for reporting.

See , which I have yet to forward to
kernel maintainers.

It looks like UFS (Universal Flash Storage, not Unix filesystem) kernel
modules are not included in d-i initrd or udebs.

Comments/Problems:

When trying to install using the debian non-graphical installer, initial boot
went fine, network card was not detected due to the kernel not supporting it
(mediatek 7902) but using a wired connection let me connect to internet and
pass that step.

However, when detecting disks, the only disk available for install was the usb
drive I had the installer on - it did not detect the 256gb UFS SSD.
The SSD had a partition with windows 11 (which I shrunk to leave free space for
the debian). I disabled Secure Boot and Fast Start on the UEFI BIOS, and still
the debian installer didn't see the SSD.

I tried booting from the Live XFCE version of debian 12 stable, and
surprisingly, once on the Live system it detected the windows partition (it
showed up on the desktop as an encrypted drive) and when running the calamares
installer, it detected the SSD. Thanks to this I was able to install debian.
So, using the same debian ISO (the one from the link I put here when prompted),
the debian installer couldn't see the SSD, but calamares from Debian Live
detected the SSD.

Apart from the Debian 12 Live Xfce image, I also tried the testing image
installer, as well as the image that has the developing version of the
installer and that installs debian 13 testing (trixie).
None of the installers, no matter the image, detected my SSD.

Please make sure that any installation logs that you think would
be useful are attached to this report. (You can find them in the
installer system in /var/log/ and later on the installed system
under /var/log/installer.) Please
