The OP is talking about the time, when tasksel was based on aptitude syntax.
It was changed back in 2012.

However I think this will never come back...

Had to install more packages using apt.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Years ago the installer offered a page with selectors for more
application
areas, in particular software development (gfortran, gcc, gnat, nedit)
and publication
(LaTeX). Please provide such a page again.
