Less than three weeks later (2014-03-05) the problem reappeared - in exactly the same table. Checking the binlog on the master with "mysqlbinlog -v -v" shows that the problem is apparently caused when the binlog is written. This points towards upstream bug #65551 (http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=65551).
