Package: googletest
Version: 1.8.0-6
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

googletest recommended against a system-wide installation of gtest and
disabled the install target on their build system. While it seems
they maintain this odd recommendation, they have backtracked on
disabling the installation and since version 1.8 have added install
rules for cmake.

Despite the upstream recommended best practice that each project
should build gtest from source, it would be nice if the shared
libraries were also provided by Debian. This would enable Debian to
build packages that follow the more common approach of having libgtest
available. Also, providing a libgtest package would not exclude
continuing to have the sources in the googletest package for projects
that do want to build it from source.

The reason for my request is that I am now packaging a series of
packages into Debian that make use of gtest and they expect to find
one available in the system. It seems a bit silly having to build it
again for each of them, not to mention patching their build system to
use local sources instead.

CentOS 6 (gtest 1.5), CentOS 7 (gtest 1.6), Fedora 26 (gtest 1.7), and
FreeBSD 10.3 and 11.0 (gtest 1.7), all provide libtest too despite
upstream recommendation.

I get that upstream has its own opinion on how things should be done,
I can patch projects to build googletest so it builds in Debian, and I
understand how the current Debian packages follows upstream
recommendation. However, I think it's easy to understand how someone
might disagree with upstream, and it would only make Debian better if
a shared library would also be provided for such projects.

Thank you
Carnë
