I think I found why my XFCE4 fails to start when starting it via startx.
It seems that the .ICE-unix directory in /tmp is created as the current
user, but the session-manager needs the directory to have root as owner.

this is caused by /selinux not being mounted. This dir can only be
mounted if the kernel has selinux enabled already.
There is a bootstrapping issue with selinux right now: if you enable it
without having a policy, sysvinit will panic.
