I got this problem yesterday, too. Happened after apt-get upgrade, all
newly started programs (restarted because of a crash in the case of
firefox) couldn't resolve the domain names anymore. After changing
/etc/nsswitch.conf as described in the original bug report things worked

GCC to clarify whether this change was intentional, see

closed in recent versions of vim. Do you confirm that?

Right now I'm using version 7.0-122+1 from unstable, the .desktop file
has the %U stem so that gnome passes an URL to vim. Both opening files
with vim from the gnome desktop using the contextual menu and manually
running 'gvim file://...' works fine here.
