This bug had fixed in 1:0.2.6-19.
The main change between in Debian 11 stable 1:0.2.6-18 and Debian 12 testing
1:0.2.6-19 is that the zhcon Build-Depends: remove libpth-dev.

I suggestion set default locales LANGUAGE to C or unset LANGUAGE env.
At present, it set to en_US:en, this will cause some problems in no en env.
