I compiled both versions as per your instructions, and the behaviour is the
same each time.
I need to use setpci ... to get the screen backlight on.
Do you need any additional information?

Just reflecting on this. I was following Debian testing, and installing the
kernels as they came through. The last one that worked for me was
linux-image-2.6.32-5-686
