Thanks for the pointer. I installed the firmware-ipw2x00 package
yesterday (I also reinserted the module to make sure the new firmware
would be used). Since then I've had two disconnects. The first occurred
just like the ones before. The latter actually made the computer drop
off the WLAN so that

Every now and then when the network is stressed the interface just dies.
Network manager displays flawless signal and connectivity but not as much as a
ping will go out.

After installing the latest batch of updates my mouse cursor/pointer is now
invisible. I can tell the touchpad is working because buttons hilite and the
keys work (as long as I know where the cursor is supposed to be). Cursor is
restored
I solved the issue:
The cause for the error messages were two processes; conky and xscreensaver
which were not being closed properly at session exit.
I appended my X startup script to include closing commands for both processes
and no longer get the errors.
I don't know if this counts as a

Ok, so it was the CPU.
After upgrading the CPU today I was able to run fsck with the ehci_hcd module
in use with no problems whatsoever.
USB it seems is fairly CPU dependant.

I tried the irqpoll option and it helps, sort of: I will still get the error
'disabling IRQ3', but the disk remains accessible after and does not power off.
This does not fix the problem though, as any program or process will still
crash or report read errors when the IRQ gets disabled.
