Today I used debian-snapshot to downgrade libpacklib and all the
cernlib-derived packages to the following version from 2010
http://snapshot.debian.org/package/cernlib/2006.dfsg.2-14.1/
I'm sure CERNLIB worked on my machine at that time. That did not solve
the problem.
I also tried compiling my

Some investigation showed that upgrading libcurl, libcurl-openssl and
libcurl-gnutls to version 7.16.2-4 fixes the bug (curl's Changelog
mentions something about a double-free bug being fixed in 7.16.2-4).
However, freepops is still not working for me. I get the following messages:
