I'm having this same problem in Debian 8.2. with openvpn 2.3.4-5.
As the original reporter starting openvpn with
# _SYSTEMCTL_SKIP_REDIRECT=1 /etc/init.d/openvpn start
works.

cmatrix -l changes the console font, but it fails to restore the
