After upgrading from stable to testing the display can't be turned on
again after it goes to sleep. This is using xfce. I tried upgrading from
nouveau to the nvidia drivers but that didn't change anything in that
regard.

Something that might be related: while unpacking during the upgrade
process, the display turned itself on and off every 1s until it
eventually returned to the desktop with a message saying that the power icon
from xfce crashed more than x times in the last n seconds. So I removed
it.

xfce is at version 4.12
