If this info could be helpful, I use kernel 2.6.32.4 customized for the
Acer Aspire One; udev 154-1; gconf2 2.28.1-3 and lots of Gnome 2.30
parts from unstable.

When I issued the commands without the USB stick plugged in, nothing
happened (including when gvfs-mount -oi was in its monitoring events
state).

Same thing here in a Acer Aspire One AOA150 netbook. gsynaptics was
working until it was upgraded to a stub package which only installs
gpointing-device-settings. Enable Tapping can be either checked or
unchecked, and the thing does not work. I tried to downgrade to
gsynaptics once again,
and gsynaptics to the stable versions, everything worked fine.

The instructions found on their website are really confusing, but Debian
itself could make SynCE installation a LOT easier with some clean-up.
