i can confirm that iceape's general.startup-behavior is fixed.
but the problem concering the skin selection persists as already
described:
in the case of skin selection, about:config will show a proper entry
along the lines of my selection in the preferences window. after
restart the changes do

Is your ~/.mozilla folder writable for the user?
It seems that the settings just aren't saved in your profile.
just to confirm Alexanders post: yes, ~/.mozilla is writable. all my
other preferences are saved perfectly fine.

... in order to clarify: screwed up fonts means big, ugly
fonts with no anti-aliasing. it does NOT mean unreadable though.
