The solution I followed is removing the line with: gtk.gdk.threads_init() and this would side-step the gtk.gdk_threads_enter() and the elusive gtk.gdk_threads_leave() . I understand that the problem is with libglib > 2.4 which allows a questionable call and it seems the devs are not in a hurry to fix it because it could have nasty side-effects.
