I fixed it, but I still consider it a bug.
Starting it from the visual interface gave no indications of what was wrong.
Then I started it from the command line. After searching all over the web, and
much trial and error:
In VLC, I switched Tools - Preferences - Video - Output

Sorry, I meant I was able to stop it by:

The bug fix I submitted for 710754 (VLC doesn't play MOV file) worked to fix
this, too, although it's not a real fix, because the movie player needs to make
some indication of how to fix it.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply.
I'm sorry that I know almost nothing about this.
Do you mean that VLC itself is a third party package?
Or could the Debian code detect the source and version number of the third
party package subroutines it calls, and warn the user of incompatibility?
Which

I don't think so, at least it's not now, and I don't think I
made any changes other than what was necessary.

Earlier today I reported that my wireless connection kept dropping. It was
working working fine until I upgraded to Wheezy. Then the wireless connection

Hi,
Sorry for my loss of patience after about 15 hours of working on it late into
the night. The GUI and greeter are working again. I don't really know what
caused the problems. Maybe it's because I maxed out the root partition space,
although I didn't see an error about it, or maybe
