Here's some more additional information.
I just tried using an SSL connection to the IMAP server on our internal
LAN ... and things worked OK. So the issue is not with SSL alone.So
it appears to be related to making an IMAP connection over a slower
remote connection.

after sending mail. When the sent mail is copied to the "Sent" folder
we'd receive an error saying that the operation
