I just found that I could activate a compositing manager in metacity.
This displays the very same symptoms. So the bad behaviour does apply to
every compositing managers that I have tried (compiz, mutter,
metacity+compositing, gnome-shell)

Just installed sid and was bitten by this bug. I put layout.css.dpi to
'0' and now everything is ok.
Note that even the interface was hard to read, not only the messages and
