After the installer completed and the CD ejected, I rebooted the machine and
it booted strait into the graphical interface without any requests for
firmware. At that point I verified that eth1 (the pci card) had an IP
address and I pinged a few sites. When I moved the ethernet cable

I noticed that you had replied to a bug with which mine (#609388) had been
merged, and had requested information about the RTL8111 operating under
Lenny.
I also failed to install squeeze (amd64) due to the network card issue, but
was able to successfully install a copy of Lenny (5.0.4
I have found a workaround. It seems that while the Squeeze installer cannot
seem to utilize the RTL8111, the resulting installation does not have the
problem.
I executed the following steps:
1) Installed an old 10/100 PCI network card I had lying around
2) Booted from netinstall CD:

As an update I tried the full install CD image
(debian-squeeze-di-beta2-amd64-CD-1.iso) and had the same result. The
systems boots, and the installer starts, but I soon get requests for
rtl8168d-1.fw and rtl8168d-2.fw.
I have installed Lenny 5.0.4 i386 from a CD I had laying around and
Forgot to include that (under my working lenny install) lspci -knn gives the
following:

I am familiar with the manual, however the source package downloadable from
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/firmware-realtek is
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-no
nfree_0.27.tar.gz which, as you can se from my original report, does not
contain

Since the installation manual section 6.4

does mention loose firmware files or packages containing firmware,
I attempted to provide .deb packages to the installer in place of the
requested rtl8168d-1.fw file
