Bug#501125: Plain vanilla QT build resolved the issue

I downloaded the "virgin" QT source tarball from Trolltech and rebuilt it locally. Then I replaced the libraries in /usr/lib with the ones I built. With the new libraries the problem disappeared. I suspect some Ubuntu customization is to blame.
