I inspected the environment variables set for wget, and I got:

Gwget sets http_proxy, but doesn't set https_proxy and ftp_proxy. As a result,
wget won't use the proxy for FTP and secure HTTP downloads.

What X server are you using?
Previously I've tried it with Xnest and VNC. Both had the problem. Now I
have tried it with a real X server (xserver-xfree86) and it works! The
captions are missing only on VNC and Xnest servers.
