I fixed this by overriding Evince's window size in my window manager. If you're
using compiz, open the configuration tool (ccsm) and go to Window Management
Window Rules then create a new size rule for Evince (Type set to Class; you
can use the window selector to set the Class to Evince by

display :1). Here is the correct log.

I located a copy of this file on the web and placed it in the above directory.
The tetex-bin package subsequently installed and was set up successfully.
