i had switched to slim but i reinstalled lightdm and the libpam-systemd
package - the reboot seemed to work fine albeit with some dreadful
screen corruption after hitting enter until the desktop displayed (but i
think this is a nvidia driver issue)
i will keep using lightdm for the next
